Keynote Speakers

Dr. Donald Ingber

Dr. Donald Ingber is a Founding Director of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, the Judah Folkman Professor of Vascular Biology at Harvard Medical School and the Vascular Biology Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, and the Hansjörg Wyss Professor of Bioinspired Engineering at the Harvard John A. Paulsen School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Ingber’s work centers on biologically-inspired engineering, where he and his team develop new technologies to improve medical care and sustainability. Examples include the Organ Chip, cancer therapeutics, and dialysis-like sepsis therapeutics, among many others. He has received many awards, including the Robert A. Pritzker Award and the Shu Chien Award, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Inventors, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Joan Reede

Dr. Joan Reede was appointed Harvard Medical School’s dean for diversity and community partnership in 2002, and she is recognized for her work in developing and managing programs to promote the increased recruitment, retention, and advancement of underrepresented minority faculty at Harvard Medical School (HMS). In addition to her support of minorities and women in healthcare, she serves as Professor of Medicine at HMS, Professor of Society, Human Development, and Health at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, and Assistant in Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital. Some of her many awards include the Boston NAACP Health Award; the American Association of University Administrators Exemplary Models of Administrative Leadership Award; the Herbert W. Nickens Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine; and the Riland Medal for Public Service from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007.

Dr. Xuanhe Zhao

Dr. Zhao is a professor of mechanical engineering and civil and environmental engineering at MIT. His lab strives to harness the power of biotechnology, materials, and mechanics to address pressing health and sustainability challenges. Some of his past projects included the engineering of hydrogels to guide catheters throughout the body and designing quick-sealing surgical tape for use in medical settings, among many others. A key aim of Dr. Zhao’s current research focus on the development of soft materials and systems. He is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, ONR Young Investigator Award, SES Young Investigator Medal, ASME Hughes Young Investigator Award, Adhesion Society’s Young Scientist Award, Materials Today Rising Star Award, and Web of    Science Highly Cited Researcher.
